Halal certification: frequently asked questions

The questions Australian businesses ask us most often, answered honestly rather than evasively.

What is halal certification?

+

Halal certification is an independent verification that a product, ingredient or process complies with Islamic dietary and lifestyle requirements. A certifier reviews your ingredients, suppliers, production process and premises, audits the site, and issues a certificate confirming compliance. It gives Muslim consumers confidence in your product and, for many export markets and retailers, it is a condition of doing business.

How do I get halal certified in Australia?

+

The process starts with a conversation about your business, products and suppliers. You then provide ingredient and supplier documentation, which is reviewed in detail. An on-site audit follows, covering how your products are made, stored and handled. Once compliance is confirmed, your certificate is issued, and periodic audits keep it current. Contact Halal Control to begin.

How much does halal certification cost in Australia?

+

Cost depends on the size and complexity of your operation, the number of products and ingredients involved, and whether you are certifying for the domestic market or for export. A single café with a short menu is a very different piece of work to a manufacturer with hundreds of ingredients. Contact us with a description of your business and you will get a clear quote rather than a vague range.

How long does halal certification take?

+

The timeline depends primarily on how quickly your ingredient and supplier documentation can be assembled, since that is usually the longest step. Once documentation is complete and the audit is scheduled, certification typically follows shortly after. We will give you a realistic timeframe for your specific business at the outset rather than after you have committed.

Do you certify restaurants and cafés?

+

Yes. This is a real gap in the Australian market, as several of the larger certifiers explicitly decline to certify restaurants, food trucks, food stalls and privately owned catering services. Halal Control certifies restaurants, cafés, takeaway shops and caterers.

Is halal certification valid for export?

+

Export markets each have their own requirements, and the certification needs to be prepared with the destination market in mind. Tell us where you intend to sell and we will tell you honestly what is required and whether we can support that market, before you spend money.

How long is a halal certificate valid for?

+

Certificates are issued for a fixed term and are maintained through periodic audits. Certification is not a one-off event: if your ingredients, suppliers or processes change, the certificate needs to reflect that. We review your operation on an ongoing basis so your certificate remains accurate.

What happens if one of my suppliers is not halal certified?

+

This is one of the most common issues we find. A single uncertified ingredient or supplier can compromise the halal status of a finished product. Where we find one, we tell you exactly which ingredient or supplier is the problem and what your options are, whether that means obtaining supplier certification or substituting the ingredient.
